In traditional Bangladesh cooking, this knife is a tool that is put on the ground and you place your foot on it in order to brace it and keep it still. Next you slice vegetables by holding them up against the blade.
It is a long, curved blade that cuts on a platform that is held in place using your foot. Both hands are used to hold the item that is being cut and move it against the blade. The sharper side of the knife faces towards the user. This method gives you control over the cutting process and is used to cut anything from large pumpkins to small tiny shrimp.
A larger version of this knife that has a larger blade, is used for gutting and cutting fish. Another version of this knife is named the Nariyal Khuruchni (coconut grater). The coconut grater has a flat round top with sharp small teeth all around it that are used to serrate the coconut. Dao or daa (is one of the many versions that is used in Bangladesh). The Dao is a variation of the boti which has a handle on it.
This knife is not unique to Bengal. It is also used in different regions throughout India. It is known by different names in different languages. Some of the names of this knife in different Indian languages are:
Konkani: Addili
Marathi: Vili or Morli
Odia: Panikhi
Bihar: Pirdai
Tamil: Aruvamanai
Telugu: Kathipeeta

It is known as Chulesi in Nepal and it is used to chop vegetables in rural areas of Nepal.
