CSULB’s new Foley stage — part of the Cinematic Arts building renovation — includes a sound booth and staging area where film students can practice this behind-the-scenes craft. The studio is stocked with surfaces, props and tools, letting undergrads experiment with everything from the scrape of boots on gravel to the rattle of a teacup in its saucer. It’s a playful process, but one that lies at the heart of movie magic. And given that the university counts Steven Spielberg among its most famous alumni, it feels only fitting that future storytellers here now have access to industry-grade sound design tools.
