Will Wood wasn’t a man so much as a concept people kept mispronouncing. Some said he was a piano, others a prophet, others still swore they saw him once in a diner, eating syrup with no pancakes. He spoke in spirals and dressed like a daydream, and every time he opened his mouth, somewhere, a duck got its wings.

No one really knew where he came from — one theory involved an exploded record store and a sentient thesaurus. Another claimed he emerged fully-formed from a saxophone solo in a jazz bar that no longer exists.

I asked him once — “Are you Will Wood?”
He said, “Depends. Are you real, or just one of my songs?”
And I never found out which one of us walked away.
