Taking your friends flying can be very rewarding and fun, but also a major safety risk, as some passengers can be quite distracting to a pilot. We are all aware of the risks of taking provocative or angry passengers flying with us, but what about our closest friends that always make us laugh over the dinner table? What if that dinner table is 50nm away or more!? Could you put up with their distraction for that long? To answer some of these questions for myself, I conducted two identical short flights to a nearby airport that I was already very familiar with. Take a look for yourself and see if you can beat my safe passenger flight checklist. The FAA encourages us to be safe pilots and make safe decisions while in the air, but sometimes those decisions become social obligations. Make the right choice.
