A haunting bat has been spotted over ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile. It hides from view when observed in infrared light, but it lights up in eerie shades of red in visible light. The right wing and body of the bat are the RCW 94 and 95 nebulae, respectively. The image spans an area of the sky equivalent to four full Moons, and combines data from the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA).
