Certain molecules have the ability to absorb ultraviolet energy, which lifts them to a higher, but unstable energy level. If, in returning to a more stable state, some of this energy is released as a visible light, we have the phenomenon known as fluorescence.
The film explains the mechanism of energy storage and release in the double bonds of organic chemistry; and the characteristics necessary for a fluorescent molecule to be capable of practical application. Today the organic chemist uses this theory in the synthesis of highly specific fluorescent molecules for special purposes.
Award winner at the International Film and Television Festival of New York, 1971.
