Flower (mom) and Blossom (baby) go boating on a beautiful day. When they stop for a breakfast of pancakes they witness a little drama......
The birds in this video are in order of appearance: a lesser yellowlegs and a semipalmated plover. The dog is my German shepherd Brooke who was completely oblivious to all the drama she was creating.
I am putting the 'Flower and Blossom in a boat' series together to practice story telling and to gain experience with green screening. I am using some of my old wildlife footage that was originally never filmed with green screen in mind. This is making it challenging and also fun, figuring out how to make it work. I am learning lots, all this will help when I get the Tiny Explorer III finished and ready for filming at the end of this summer :)
The story here: Flower and Blossom go boating on a beautiful morning on the lake (Fish Lake near Whitehorse, Yukon). They stop to have a pancake breakfast at a nice sheltered little cove. Soon there are a lot of frantic bird calls and a little drama unfolds, momentarily distracting Flower and Blossom from their picnic. The birds are upset because a large dog has shown up on the scene. They are worried because they have a chick. The dog is oblivious to their presence and just plays with her stick, no idea about the panic she is causing. One of the plover parents flies over to a nearby island and calls to the baby. The chick wades into the water and swims towards the calls of its parent, something I did not know shorebird chicks could do until I witnessed this, cool :) I felt a little worried about the little one, it was so tiny and could have been swept away, but it persists and finally makes it to the island. The dog leaves and everything goes back to normal again. Flower and Blossom return to their meal after this bit of excitement.
I tried to add the bird calls but the day was so windy and my little Sony Handicam sound system could not deal with it, making the bird sounds too 'dirty' to use :( So I had to leave them out. I am experimenting right now, learning how to put together a fictional story with the limitations I have from using my old wildlife footage. Each video I make in this series will use a different form of story telling. I know that some people would 'get' the story in this video, but others would not, depending on how experienced they are with birds and wildlife, but with the limitations I had, this was the best I could do. This series is all about me learning and any input from you guys is welcome :)
No birds or mice (they never left my studio, it is all green-screened) were harmed in the making of this video.
