Team Rubicon’s Incident Commander, Drew Hanna, provides an update in Asheville, North Carolina, where our teams are assisting with flood recovery efforts at the Veterans Restoration Quarters and in the surrounding community.
Our forward operating base is established at the Veterans Restoration Quarters, a facility that housed 190 homeless and vulnerable veterans before it was severely damaged by flooding from Hurricane Helene. Floodwaters reached approximately halfway up the first-floor windows, rendering the building uninhabitable and displacing veterans across the community.
Team Rubicon is committed to being on-site for the next 30 days, focusing on removing and clearing debris at this vital facility to prepare it for restoration, as well as supporting the wider community with debris removal services. Today, we have six teams actively engaged in various efforts:
• Two muck-out teams are removing flood-damaged debris and carefully identifying personal belongings of residents to return sentimental items.
• A heavy equipment team is moving mud and large debris accumulated around the facility’s parking lot and demolishing a destroyed church located on the eastern side of the property.
• A sawyer team is clearing fallen trees and debris to improve safety and accessibility.
• A site survey team is conducting assessments to provide aid to additional residents throughout Buncombe County.
Our goal is to deliver essential services and restore hope to the people of Asheville, helping them rebuild and recover from this disaster.
