The hawk chicks may have all fledged but they still return to the nest occasionally to rest or receive food. Watch as Arthur drops a prey item at the nest, followed by P2 arriving a short time later to eat. Big Red makes an appearance during this time and P2 displays a behavior called "mantling the prey," is an instinctual response where a bird of prey (like a hawk, falcon, or eagle) spreads its wings and fans its tail out over a food item to protect it. Finally, P1 shows up at the nest to devour the leftovers in the rain.

A Red-tailed Hawk pair has been nesting above Cornell University’s athletic fields since 2012. They have made use of two different light towers for their nest sites. In 2012, 2015, and 2018–2023 they used a tower near Fernow Hall, and in 2013, 2014, and 2016, they used the tower nearest Weill Hall. We installed cameras at both of these sites to get a better look at the intimate behavior of these well-known birds as they raise their young amid the bustle of a busy campus.
