Flashback: The Quest for Identity is one of the main reasons I wanted to get into the video game industry in the first place, and it’s still one of my all-time favorite games.
Originally released in 1992 by Delphine Software on just about every platform at the time, it features an incredible score by Jean Baudlot, Raphaël Gesqua, and Fabrice Visserot.
This suite is a collection of orchestral covers (with a heavy dose of retro synths), inspired by the feel of an ’80s sci-fi action score by way of film composers such as Jerry Goldsmith, Basil Poledouris, and Harold Faltermeyer. This recording is raw, analogue, and appropriately grimy in all of the best ways and that was by design.
Over the past 20(!!!) years, I’ve released a handful of covers of the amazing menu music as well as a few of the other themes.
Back in 2015, I also put together a complete re-recording of the score using real vintage analog synthesizers. You can check that album out here, or stream it on your streaming platform of choice youtube.com/watch?v=lkt7PxpVsFk&t
That said, this version is what I consider my definitive cover of this awesome score. Enjoy.
