It's about 6:20AM on the beach in Deer Lake State Park, Northwest Florida, the Panhandle. The sun is appearing over the dunes to the north, illuminating the brilliant pink-orange-red colors of two flamingos south on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. I had read that these birds were blown up here from the south by tropical storm Cindy a week ago. They were seen in Perdido Key to the west and have been here three days. I've never seen such birds before. They don't seem to be finding much to eat except in extensive preening of feathers. Not bothered by the two people that had come with me from the west and three turtle watch volunteers. We watched these elegant visitors as if on a movie set for about 10 minutes, until they flew to the west and turned over flow connecting to Deer Lake, a coastal dune lake.
