I was working on an old Gary Fisher bike, and the left shifter would shift back and forth from 1st and 2nd gears, but it wouldn't shift into 3rd gear. I opened up the shifter to see what was going on inside. I worked through the problem which turned out to be a sticky pawl. I lubed it with Tri-Flow, and worked the pawl until it loosened up. I was able to get it to shift through all three gears.
The shifter is an Shimano ST EF29-L.
