Fixing the high pressure fuel pump regulator seals on a Bosch HP fuel pump - on Freelander TD4. (Similar engine on Rover 75 CDT. MG ZT CDT, BMW 320d, 520d, 318d, X3 2.0d, 118d).
You could also call this video Freelander smoke reduction, stage 3. As this was a part of the car that needed fixing and was found while working through checking the car while trying to reduce the smoke that it produced. The high pressure fuel pump regulator seals were worn and so the fuel pressure was lower than it should be. This could lead to poorer atomisation of the diesel at the injectors. If the pressure lowers too much the car wont start or will lead to poor running.
The high pressure fuel rail can be measured via the right OBDII scanner (mine was a cheap ELM scanner and didn’t measure it) or it can be measured by measuring the voltage on the HP fuel rail sensor. This is shown in the video. Mine was too low, indicating a possible HP fuel pump regulator fault, which was indeed the case. It had worn seals and was fairly easy to fix.
You will need some Torx bits with a wrench.T25 bit needed, but a set is better. If you don’t have a set, get some on Amazon UK: amzn.to/2Pgmf48
