How could the Portuguese be improved in Medieval 2 Total War, to be more enjoyable, and historical at the same time.

For this series we take a faction that the community believes got cheated in Total War. We then discuss it's problems and try and improve it, keeping roughly within the limitations off the game engine.
This is done for fun, but if any developers want to take any of these ideas, feel free to.

Portugal is not historical at all, but I think I can make it work, and make it more interesting to.
