Turns out both voltage regulators (AN7812F) were broken. Not sure why there are separate ones. Both are 12V and 1 amp each but the radio tuner and tape deck combined use less than one amp and could totally be connected to the same regulator.
The tuner is connected to a standard TV outlet. Not sure if this is an European thing or is done worldwide, but there are many FM channels on the cable you can listen to, much more than over the air.
The input level slider has become overly sensitive over the years it seems.
The tuner and tape deck are connected via some proprietary connector but it's rather simple. The tuner for example has 5 pins. Two for power (12V and ground) and three for left, right, and audio ground (this is isolated from the power ground). Same goes for the tape deck but the connector has more audio pins (for recording and playback). There is no control data flowing at all, this is purely analog.
I'm usually not a fan of this proprietary stuff but in this case it means that you only need one power plug for three devices which is kinda neat.
To do:
- replace broken needle on turntable player (already ordered)
- find replacement belt for the CD player (mine are all too big)
