CUE 1. "Shut the car door with your butt."
The Fix: With a slight bend in your knees, drive your hips straight back, as if your hands are full of groceries and you're closing a car door.
❌What NOT to do: Do not let your hips sink down toward the floor, which turns the movement into more of a squat.
CUE 2. "Paint your legs with the bar."
The Fix: Pack your shoulder blades back and down and use your upper back to actively drag the barbell down your thighs to keep the weight centered over your midfoot and protect your spine from heavy leverage.
❌ What NOT to do: Do not let the bar drift forward into open space, which creates a massive gap that instantly pulls your torso down and strains your lower back.
CUE 3. "Don't break the tripwire."
The Fix: Freeze and reverse the rep when your hips stop moving backward—treating that point like a tripwire—to isolate 100% of the maximum stretch strictly on the legs.
❌ What NOT to do: Do not force the barbell all the way down to your shoelaces, because once your hips stop moving, any extra depth is just your lower back rounding to cheat the range of motion.
CUE 4. "Show your back pockets to the ceiling."
The Fix: At the bottom of the lift, imagine subtly tilting your tailbone upward toward the ceiling to pull your hamstrings completely tight.
❌ What NOT to do: Do not let your pelvis tuck under at the bottom like a beaten dog tucking its tail, which completely slacks the working leg muscles and overloads your spine.
CUE 5. "Crush a nut with your butt."
The Fix: Finish the movement by driving your hips forward horizontally and squeezing your cheeks as hard as possible to lock the weight out into a strong, completely vertical stance.
❌ What NOT to do: Do not aggressively lean your upper body backward at the top, which pinches your back, kills your balance, and loses all glute tension.
