Fix Windows 11 Error 0x800F0922 & 0x80070003-0x40008 Update Failed (Complete Tutorial)
Are you getting Windows 11 Update Error 0x800F0922 or the "Setup has encountered a critical error" (0x80070003 - 0x40008) message when trying to update or upgrade Windows 11?
In this video, I show the exact problem I encountered while installing the 2026-05 Preview Update (KB5089573) Build 26200.8524. The update reached the final stage, displayed "You're 98% there", and then failed with "Something didn't go as planned. No need to worry—undoing changes."
I also demonstrate what happened when I tried upgrading using the official Windows 11 ISO file. Instead of starting the installation, Setup immediately failed with:
"Setup has encountered a critical error."
"Sorry, we're having trouble determining if your PC can run Windows 11."
Error code: 0x80070003 - 0x40008
After checking Windows Update, the update was failing with:
Install error - 0x800F0922
In this tutorial, we investigate the root cause, verify Windows 11 compatibility requirements, check the Recovery Partition, System Reserved Partition, and EFI System Partition, and finally discover the actual issue preventing the update from installing successfully.
