A nine patch quilt block is a block made with nine squares laid out in a 3 x 3 grid. Often the fabrics alternate dark / light / dark, but there are many different options.

This is a common traditional quilt block that is used in many quilt designs, both alone or in combination with other blocks.

Some other traditional quilt blocks are actually variations of a nine patch block.
