Almost every kitchen in Baltimore, and maybe Maryland, has a tiny yellow, blue, and red tin of Old Bay seasoning. It is an essential part of local cuisine, especially this time of year! Yet, most people are unaware of the spice’s dramatic Jewish history. Old Bay was created by Gustav Brunn, a Jewish immigrant who came to Baltimore after escaping Nazi Germany.
