Mizani, a 12-year-old western lowland gorilla at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, recently underwent what is believed to be the first reported mastoidectomy ever performed on a gorilla. The complex procedure brought together physicians from UC San Diego Health and wildlife health experts from the Safari Park to treat an infection in the bone behind his ear, one that can occur in both humans and gorillas.
