Meet Winteria telescopa, aka the binocular fish, aka the jelly-faced spookfish, a species of barrel-eye fish with truly peculiar peepers. We get a great view of them thanks to this fish’s translucent head.
This is the first footage of it filmed alive in its natural environment. Before now what we’ve learned of them has mostly come from individuals collected in fishing nests, destroying their delicate structures as they were brought to the surface.
This new footage provides a stunning insight into their alien lives in the Twilight Zone.
