Researchers from Dalhousie University, UBC, the Leibniz Institute and the Hakai Institute captured the first known footage of northern resident killer whales and Pacific white-sided dolphins hunting salmon together off the coast of British Columbia.
Using drones and suction-cup biologging tags, the team recorded synchronized diving, shared foraging and whales following dolphins to depth as both species searched for Chinook salmon. The footage suggests the whales may be using dolphin echolocation to help find prey, while dolphins gain protection and access to leftover salmon pieces.
The study offers new insight into how top predators interact and how co-operative behaviour may help them adapt in a changing ocean.
