A few weeks ago, De Havilland Canada officially broke ground on their new airport and manufacturing facility just east of Calgary!
De Havilland Field, airport code CDHF, will be the future home of all of De Havilland Canada’s manufacturing, production, and maintenance.
I made a more detailed video about the project back in 2022 following the original announcement, but long story short, the whole project will be a huge boost for Canadian aerospace and for manufacturing jobs here in Alberta.
To celebrate this milestone, De Havilland organized an event for employees and some media on the future site of the airport, which is about halfway between Chestermere and Strathmore.
Making things even more interesting though, was the temporary 2000-foot-long dirt runway that they had built on the site, the kind of runway that De Havilland Canada airplanes are best suited for. And so, not only was there essentially an airshow, but the first official landings at the new airport’s site took place!
Many of those exact aircraft were also there at Toronto Downsview Airport when the company held their farewell event there in 2022. The festivities also included a flypast from a Dash 8, and a water drop from two Alberta Government CL-215Ts.
The whole De Havilland Field project has been something I’ve been eagerly following since they first announced it, so it was a true honour to be there to see all of this happen. A huge thank you to De Havilland Canada for inviting me out to document some of this history in the making, and enjoy the video!
