So what do the Titanic and submarines have in common?
No, we’re not talking about the Titan submersible—this involves a Cold War mystery involving nuclear submarines and the Titanic.
On Sept. 1 of 1985, the famous oceanographer Robert Ballard, in his Argo Submersible, took the first pictures of the Titanic on the ocean floor.
But that was just a cover story.
In the 1960s, two of the United States’ nuclear submarines went missing in the Atlantic: the USS Scorpion and the USS Thresher.
The Navy even found the wrecks and took pictures, but they couldn’t survey the sites, and they really wanted to know: Why did these subs sink?!
