Today we are harvesting our first 50 bulbs of garlic. These are hard-neck garlic that we are not only harvesting but starting to preserve. Hard neck garlic does not store as long as soft neck garlic so we will be very creative in the weeks ahead on how to preserve this garlic for long-term storage. Here are the basics for repairing your garlic cloves to go in the ground all winter:
Separate each clove from the bulb.
Soak the cloves in vodka or another sterilizer for 10 minutes.
Strain the sterilizer.
Put cloves into a container with fertilizer. Per 5 gallons of water, add 1 tablespoon fish emulsion, 1 tablespoon kelp meal, 1 tablespoon mycorrhizal fungi, and 5 teaspoons baking soda.
Soak the cloves in the fertilizer for at least 30 minutes up to overnight.
Plant your garlic.
