Here's how it works for everyone who's wondering:
When you enable the feature in the app (by setting roll fault to 180) then it checks for roll to be near 180 to engage "darkride mode". Once the board is level upside down it will engage and negate the reported pitch to enable balancing (and deal with a bunch of other corner cases to prevent weird shit from happening).
To stop, Darkride mode has "reverse-stop" enabled by default to deal with the no sensor issue.
Also, after 10 seconds of not riding, darkride mode is disabled for safety, then you first have to ride normal again before flipping it upside down. This way it doesn't just randomly engage on you when you're handling the board or loading it into the car...
