The human-caused Hawk Fire in Nevada has spread rapidly across northwest Reno, destroying homes and other structures and injuring at least six people since it began on Sunday, Aug. 23.
The blaze grew to about 20 square miles as strong, shifting winds made firefighting difficult. Authorities ordered roughly 42,000 residents to evacuate immediately, while another 45,000 were placed under evacuation warnings.
About 800 firefighters, along with Nevada National Guard troops and helicopters, were deployed as officials warned the fire could remain unpredictable for several days. U.S. Route 395 was also partially closed, and thousands of residents remained without power.
