For a decade, “Big” Jim Martin was the unmistakable guitarist of Faith No More, from 1983 until late 1993. When the band reunited in 2009 after breaking up in 1998, fans were stunned that Martin was missing. The story of why he left is messy, but the way things ended – and why he wasn’t invited back – is even uglier.
Jim came from the Bay Area metal scene, playing in Vicious Hatred alongside future Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. In 1982, drummer Mike Bordin, keyboardist Roddy Bottum, and bassist Billy Gould formed Faith No More. Burton urged Martin to audition, he got the gig, and the classic lineup began to form.
The band spent years cycling through singers. Courtney Love briefly fronted them, but it was Chuck Mosley who became their first official vocalist, lasting for two albums before being fired over volatile behavior. With new music written, Faith No More auditioned singers and eventually chose Mr. Bungle frontman Mike Patton.
Within a week of joining, Patton wrote all the lyrics for what became The Real Thing, which launched Faith No More into the mainstream with “Epic,” “From Out of Nowhere,” and “Falling to Pieces.” The follow‑up, 1992’s Angel Dust, would be Martin’s last album with the band.
As they moved into darker, more experimental territory driven by Patton, Gould, and Bottum, Martin – a self‑described metal purist – bristled. He was widely reported as dismissing the new material as “gay disco.” Stories spread that he contributed little to Angel Dust, skipped rehearsals, and recorded his parts separately. Martin pushed back, insisting the guitar parts were his and that he contributed heavily to arrangements.
He later clarified that his problem wasn’t the songs, but the process. Under pressure to follow up The Real Thing, he felt Angel Dust was too contrived and over‑planned, with management, label people, and even journalists hovering in the studio. Meanwhile, his father had just died, and he was juggling family responsibilities while the band grew frustrated with his absence.
On tour, tensions exploded. Articles from the time described Martin as isolated on the road, with little camaraderie left. Patton mocked him onstage, swinging mics at him or tackling him during shows. At festivals, band members joked about quitting and taunted Martin in front of crowds. Behind the scenes, they were already imagining a future without him.
By late 1993, Faith No More recorded “Another Body Murdered” for the Judgment Night soundtrack without Martin, with Gould handling guitar. In early 1994, news broke: Jim Martin was out. The band said he’d essentially checked out and had to be fired. Martin said he quit first. Either way, the relationship ended in the coldest way possible – a fax formally telling him his services were no longer required.
Years later, members would describe Martin as brilliant but fundamentally out of step with their lifestyle and musical direction. Fans still divide Faith No More’s history into the “Jim era” and everything after, and the ugly truth is that the creative rift in the Angel Dust era eventually became a personal one – and it all ended with a sheet of paper coming out of a fax machine.
