Jan Sandström’s Motorbike Concerto written for Christian Lindberg is one of the most popular Swedish orchestral works of all time. In 1990, around the time that the Motorbike Concerto began a global tour, a close friend’s daughter of Sandström, Lotta, started to play trombone. Sandström promised Lotta that he would write her a concerto like he did for Lindberg, if she continued to learn the instrument.
Sandström ended up not writing a concerto for her, but instead wrote this beautiful piece, translated as Song to Lotta. Lotta did not continue playing trombone, but dedicated her life instead to other important matters, and now works for The United Nations.
