In the summer of 2004, I returned to work in Northern Ireland after two years of commuting between Birmingham and Newry. By that time, I had produced around 14 short films and wanted to produce a feature-length film. In October 2004, I began sketching out ideas for a new story.

My wife liked 'chick-flicks', so we bounced around ideas that were key features in the genre and began to develop characters. While growing up my mum had worked in a local pub, The Rose & Crown, in Yardley Hastings, Northamptonshire. At the time you could find the gamekeeper drinking with the poacher, the painter, the bricky, the gardener and so on. There were skittles played in a side room, crowded with about 18 players, drinkers and partners.

The pub owner was from Yorkshire and his wife from Scotland. You could find her every Sunday in St. Andrews Parish Church for the Anglican Communion Service. She would always leave five minutes early, blessing herself as she left to make it back to the pub to open up around 12 noon.

This sense of community inspired the idea behind 'Fiddler's Walk' but focusing more with an Irish flavour. The story gained interest in South Armagh.

In Mullaghbawn, the local pub owner, Bernard O'Hanlon, said I could use his pub as a location. We could use the exteriors of the main pub, a long hall at the back used for parties, and another smaller house bar just up the street for interiors.

Jeff Marshall, who I had worked with on many videos before joined the project and found a location in Bessbrook for the upstairs scene.

In England, Lawrence Kavanagh, who I had met on a Raindance Director's Workshop helped to develop the script and came over to work on sound during the shoot.

Sara Dylan, had worked on 'One Night', a short film I had made three years earlier. Having just left drama school she wanted to gain more experience working with filmmakers she had acted for previously. She introduced me to Bronagh Waugh as a colleague from drama school. Anthony Fitzpatrick was recommended by a local drama group and Pauline Lynch, who I had worked on a community project, helped find the majority of the cast, including Leah O'Rourke. A great team spirit developed in the cast and crew.

In the Summer of 2005, we scheduled 20 days filming and ensured the majority of the cast were only required for three days, with just Sara filming for 20 days and Anthony, 9 days. At times there were just Sara, Anthony, Jeff and myself on set all day filming scene. Jeff would do sound, I would do camera and Anthony and Sara would share the clapperboard. Every day, while my wife made sandwiches and plenty of tea to keep the crew happy.

It was quite a shock when the filming was suddenly over and the 20 days had gone. We had a wrap party and then my wife and I boarded a plane for a quick holiday near Boston, Massachusetts. I took a camera and tripod and we found ways to film exterior shots near where my wife's cousin lived near Marshfield, 30 minutes south of Boston.

I spent from September to May editing the film. Claire Fitch offered to compose and perform the music for the film. Jeff's cellar became a recording studio to do ADR of all the main actors' voice work and we re-dubbed the film.

Jeff entered the film into the Christian Broadcasting Council's Awards for 2006 and to our surprise, it won the Gold Award for Best Christian Film.

It's hard to believe that it is 12 years since we completed the film. To celebrate that great adventure, I am releasing the complete film here for your enjoyment. Have a great New Year for 2019.

All the best

George
