Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who set out in 1519 to find a sea route to Asia by sailing west. His expedition became the first to sail all the way around the world. Though Magellan was killed in the Philippines before the journey ended, his crew continued and proved that Earth was round and connected by oceans. The voyage changed history by opening global trade routes and inspiring future explorers.
