I just picked up this fake (mod, homage, replica etc) Seiko 62MAS and I actually paid good money for this! Why? Well, for starters the vintage ones from the 1960's cost 4 thousand dollars on average these days! That's for an old watch that will look like an old watch and cost more than this brand new watch just to service when the time comes. This may be a "fake" but it's very well built with a domed sapphire crystal, lumed ceramic bezel, lumed date wheel, 200M WR and it even has a Seiko movement inside! All for a fraction of the cost of even the very worst condition originals. The Seiko 62MAS is a favorite amongst Seiko collectors as it was first released in 1965 and is considered to be Seiko's first true dive watch. With the originals being so expensive now it's actually common to mod new watches to look like the vintage ones. I like to think of this more as a homage than a fake. It would never fool any real collector looking to spend real money for a legit example.
I bought this watch for $260 CAD ($187 USD) off a dude on Facebook marketplace who did the mod himself. This would have started out as a stock Seestern 62MAS clone, a good budget watch in its own right at $230 CAD. Then he would have replaced the Seestern dial with a Seiko branded one and... that's all there is to it! But keep in mind replacing the dial does require both special skills and tools (removing the stem, movement and hands) and I'm happy to say the seller did a great job with this mod. It looks great, works great and the alignment of the hands and date change-over is all within OEM factory standards. I actually have a real Seiko 5 with hand alignment that isn't as good as this! Not to mention the bezel alignment is also very good. Something that many real Seiko's have an issue with! I'm also glad to see the color of the lume on the dial indices matches the lume on the hands and bezel. I'm not sure if that was considered when choosing the dial or if it's a happy accident but it seems like a perfect match to me.
I'm super pleased with this watch. I think it looks amazing and I love the retro mid-60's vibes. Some people might not like the fact it's a fake but again, I'm okay with it here in this case. IMHO this isn't the same thing as a fake Rolex for example. It's not trying as hard to pass off as something it's not. It's not an exact replica and as far as I know, it's not even a copy of something that Seiko currently sells anymore. IDK maybe I'm naive here but to me it just doesn't seem the same as a fake Rolex that's trying to pass off as big money luxury. The average person who isn't a watch enthusiast wouldn't even know what this is. Yet people who don't know anything about watches know that a Rolex is very expensive and that's the biggest reason (the only reason for some) that people would want to wear a fake. They're trying to get attention. I don't think this is. But maybe I'm wrong. What do you think?
