We've all been there, lying awake at night, mind racing, feeling completely overwhelmed by worries and sadness. If you're exhausted from constant stress and finding it hard to feel grateful, this video is for you.
In this powerful talk, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf reveals how depression and worry are tools used to steal our gratitude and, more importantly, he shows a clear spiritual path to reclaim our peace. Learn practical ways to calm your mind and shift into a state of true gratitude.
If you're looking for real relief and hope, watch until the end.
00:00:00 - The Modern Epidemic of Ingratitude
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf opens by observing that modern society cultivates ingratitude, leading people to constantly complain about everything from their government to their education.
00:00:27 - The Metaphysical Equation of Blessings
He explains a divine law grounded in the Quran: Gratitude equals an increase in blessings, whereas ingratitude leads to a decrease in blessings and gives you more reasons to complain.
00:02:10 - The Antidote to Depression
Sharing a psychological study from UC Davis, the Shaykh highlights how simply writing down ten things to be grateful for every morning significantly lifted people's depression.
00:03:00 - Three Hidden Blessings in Every Tribulation
He shares a profound perspective on worldly trials: every tribulation contains three hidden blessings to be grateful for—it could have been worse, it afflicted your worldly life rather than your religion, and it happened in this life rather than the next.
00:04:41 - A Quranic Parable of the Ungrateful City
Reflecting on a Quranic similitude, he describes a tranquil and abundant city that fell into hunger and terror specifically because its people responded to divine blessings with ingratitude (Kufr, meaning ungratefulness in this context).
00:09:46 - Redirection of Anger and Frustration
He challenges believers to evaluate their anger. If every challenge is ultimately a test from God, getting perpetually angry at circumstances or people reveals a deeper issue with trusting the Divine decree.
00:12:34 - The Gift of Ramadan and Laylat al-Qadr
The Shaykh concludes by emphasizing the incredible gift given specifically to the Ummah of Muhammad (PBUH)—a single night (Laylat al-Qadr) better than 83 years of worship, given out of love to compensate for our shorter lifespans.

The first part of this narration has been authentically narrated in other Hadith sources. The words of this version are as follows:
Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi ﷺ said, “Women [His beloved wives] and good scent [‘itr] has been made beloved to me. The coolness of my eyes lie in Salah”
(Sunan Nasai; Al Mujtaba, Hadith: 3939, Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 2, pg. 160. Declared authentic by Imam Hakim and Hafiz Dhahabi concurs.)
According to a well-known tradition, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) stated that three things from this worldly life were made dear to him: fragrance, women, and prayer.
1. Fragrance (Perfume)
The Prophet (ﷺ) loved sweet and clean smells. He encouraged using good scents, especially on Fridays or when meeting others.
A good smell reflects cleanliness and a pleasing presence.
2. Women (Spouses)
This refers to his deep love and respect for his wives and family life.Islam teaches kindness, care, and love toward wives and family members.
The Prophet (ﷺ) was gentle, helpful, and loving at home.
3. Prayer (Salah)
Prayer is the formal daily worship in Islam.
The Prophet (ﷺ) called prayer the coolness of my eyes, meaning it brought him deep peace and comfort.
Whenever he felt stressed or sad, he turned to prayer to find relief and connect with God.
This Khutbah was delivered at the Muslim Community Center - East Bay (MCC East Bay) in Pleasanton, California on Friday, December 5, 2025.
Mohammed Abdul Baseer is an engineer and a former president of Islamic Society of East Bay (ISEB) in Fremont. He has been active in the Bay Area Muslim community since the early 1990s. Br. Baseer and his family live in Fremont.
Brother Mohammed Abdul Baseer delivers a sermon giving comforting practical and spiritual insights.

On Judgment Day, Allah will dip the richest person destined for hell in fire once and they will claim they never experienced comfort, while the poorest person dipped in paradise once will claim they never experienced hardship, revealing how the hereafter completely erases the memory and significance of worldly experiences.
The Root of Evil and Path to Love
The Prophet Muhammad taught that love of this world is the root of all evil, causing people to lie, steal, deceive, and follow base desires, and advised that to gain Allahs love, one must not love this world, while to gain peoples love, one must not long for others belongings.
The Prophet instructed believers to live in this world like a stranger or traveler, recognizing the hereafter as the true destination that is much closer than realized, with Earth revolving at 1,040 mph around the Sun, the solar system at 500,000 mph around the Milky Way center, and the Milky Way at over 1 million mph through the universe.
Divine Design and Deception
Allah deliberately made this life attractive with desires for women, children, wealth, and possessions as a test and deception compared to the hereafter, which is the true excellent abode, and the love of this world cannot coexist with the love of Allah in ones heart.
What the Righteous Love
The Prophets companions Abu Bakr, Omar, and Ali expressed their deepest loves as serving others, sacrificing for Allah, and repenting, which the angel Gabriel confirmed are the things Allah loves in believers, contrasting with worldly attachments.
The Prophet Muhammad declared his love for women for their qualities, perfume, and prayer as the coolness of his eyes, demonstrating how righteous love focuses on spiritual connection rather than worldly possession.
