Watch the top screen.
By holding B for an extended period of time, the game starts speeding through menu cancels. I start stacking speed by holding B while still holding a djinni, preventing the cancels from going through until I release. Apparently trading a djinni with yourself gets cancelled so fast that it doesn't render the top screen properly until you reopen the X menu.
