Case Type: Railroad: James v. Union Pacific
Description: While leaving some railcars on a spur overnight, the conductor mounted the rear car and radioed the engineer to shove the railcars, as the train neared the spur the conductor radioed the engineer to stop so that he could dismount and open the switch. As the train was stopping, a violent run-out of slack in the connected line of railcars knocked the conductor from the train.
Visualizations Produced:
Fearless Eye traveled to the site of the accident to collect photos, video and measurements of the area of the switch. The tracks, switch and spur were modeled in 3D, as well as a railcar matching the one the conductor was riding at the time of the accident. We then worked closely with a biomechanics expert to animate how the conductor came off the railcar and fell to the side. The video animation is segmented to display various known timeline points in the episode.
