Here's a short test of a long telephoto lens (Canon 100-200mm) with an additional Vivitar teleconverter on the end effectively doubling the field of view of the lens.
Considering all the squawk about loss of image quality, it really isn't that bad.
No, it's not the same as an equivalent EF lens, but for the difference in price it can give you a lot of room to experiment.

Also a bit of discussion about the old reliable Soviet era prime lenses.
