Adapting very quickly to a new environment is extremely important for both perpetual travellers and tourists alike, especially if you only get to visit for a short period of time.
The last thing you would want to take out of your experience in a completely different country is to manage to get comfortable only in the last few days of your trip. By the time you are finally accustomed to the cultures, traditions and everything else it has to offer, you are gone before you even know it.
In this video, Mario Stinger talks about some of his experiences as well as a few tips to avoid this from happening and to help you integrate faster when staying in a foreign country.
Finding people of your own culture, or those who you can easily speak to or relate with, is the first thing he recommends for a relatively quicker and easier integration. This way, you will be able to directly ask them for help in navigating and learning your way around the country, without wasting your time researching about them in blogs and other websites that normally do not offer much guidance and direction.
He also shares that fast integration can depend on the country you are going to. Some places have common necessities, laws and customs that are easily accessible and relatable, while there are also a few areas where people native to the country view different foreigners in a way that can actually help your moving in become a breeze. In Mario’s case, some of the places he has visited either have a good history and relationship with his home country, or generally think highly of foreigners, helping him connect with both the people and the country much faster.
Another tip, he says, is not to depend on your country’s embassy for help on simple things, especially if you are staying in a developing nation. According to him, you will only waste your time asking them for help about basic matters, such as housing and what not, as they do not offer much assistance and will also take you a month or two to even set up an appointment with them.
