Nitrogen is the cornerstone of agricultural production. And nitrogen enters farmland not only through slurry and synthetic fertiliser but also grazing excreta such as animal urine and through mineralisation of organic matter after ploughing. So we need to consider all that nitrogen coming in and some of that nitrogen might be lost to the environment through nitrate leaching to groundwater and through nitrous oxide and ammonia emissions to the air.
We caught up with Dr Dominika Krol at today’s Farming for a Better Future 2026 Open Day in Teagasc Johnstown Castle to tell us more about the solutions.
