The story centers on the White family: Mr. and Mrs. White and their son, Herbert. They come into possession of a mysterious monkeys paw, which has the power to grant three wishes to its owner. However, the paw also brings dire consequences for those who use it.
Despite warnings from a friend, Sergeant-Major Morris, about the paw’s dangerous nature, Mr. White makes a wish for money. Shortly after, Herbert dies in an accident at work, and the family receives compensation that matches the amount they wished for. Grieving and desperate, Mrs. White convinces Mr. White to use the paw to wish Herbert back to life.
As they await their son’s return, they are horrified when they hear a knock at the door, suggesting that Herbert has returned but in a horrifying state. In a panic, Mr. White makes a final wish, and the knocking stops.
