Figs are frequently picked when they are only 50% ripe, as they damage on transport and unlike other fruit they don’t ripen after picking. So they have poor flavour and texture.

If you grow your own, they are hugely superior in flavour. As they are the easiest fruit to grow and pretty beautiful plants it is  worth trying to squeeze some into your garden. If you are worried they are too big, try a dwarf variety or take Bunny’s advice on pruning, it could not be simpler.

The common variety sold in the UK is Brown Turkey, which has a good breba crop (ie the first crop to ripen that forms on older wood and over winters as tiny fruit the size of a small pea) however there are many others to choose from such as Bunny’s favourite, Desert King, which also has a good Breba crop.

Figs are extremely easy to strike from cuttings, in a hydropod propagator they often root in under 3 weeks for Bunny. When you have grown a mass surplus try making fig and cardamon pavlova – unbeatable!
