Fantasia mit Bindungen in F by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, played by Dale Carr on the organ in Örgryte nya Kyrkan {Göteborg} on 13 December, 2000

This work has had various titles, but the most authentic seems to be that given above, even though it is readable only with difficulty in the best early source. The ‘Bindungen’ are ties or suspensions, placing the work in the family of many Italian works with subtitles involving ‘durezze’ &/or ‘ligature’. There are indeed plenty of suspensions, but even more striking is the astounding motivic density of the piece.

There are but 2 main motives:
- an ascending or descending scale of 4 tones, e.g. c-d-e-f, {m.2, 0’16” ; m.17ƒƒ, 0’26” ; m.44ƒƒ, 1’50”} and
- a turning motive, e.g. d-c#-d or a-b𝄬-a {e.g. m.32ƒƒ, 1’25” ; m.39ƒƒ, 1’39” ; & esp. m.43, 1’49”}.

Both of these motives seem to emerge, as opposed to being directly presented as subjects. The 2 are combined from m.51, 2’06”, already suggested in m.43-5, 1’50”, to form a subject treated imitatively in stretto, i.e. overlapping itself. The turning motive is heard in every bar toward the end of the piece.

The recording was made in the new church in the Örgryte neighborhood of Göteborg, Sweden {Örgryte nya Kyrkan}. The organ was built under the auspices of the University of Göteborg as an attempt - roughly formulated - to recreate the organ that Schnitger built for the Jacobikirche in Hamburg {1693} in its original state. It was an enormous project that resulted in one of the finest new organs I have ever played. The instrument was inaugurated in 2000.

One of the important aspects of the project was its attempt to use not only the materials of the original organ but also the original techniques of working with and on these materials, such as casting the pipe metal on a bed of sand {to mention just one technique}.

Many people were involved in this gigantic project, but I want to list just a few important contributors: Hans Davidsson, Munetaka Yokota, Harald Vogel, Henk van Eeken, Mats Arvidsson, ….

Sweelinck’s fantasia requires no complicated registration with manual changes or pedals or echoes, so I used this registration:
