Fantasia auf die manier eines Echo, in a, by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck,
performed by Dale Carr on the organ in Krewerd {province of Groningen} on 3 June, 1984
The work is preserved in a single early source, which does not specify the use of 2 manuals or give any other indication of registration. But 'echo' is, I believe, a very flexible concept, even within the confines of the 17th-century echo fantasy and its derivatives. What is often considered to be the 'normal' echo in an echo fantasy is played on a different manual in a different tone color, or else an 8ve higher or lower ; and some 'normal' echoes in these fantasies are ornamented. But none of these possibilities matches any echo ever heard in the real world. On the other hand, echo fantasies often have lengthy canons, the following voice of which can with equal justification be considered a kind of echo ; even fugal sections are not unknown.
Though the echoes may be a useful gimmick, these works have other characteristics which should not be ignored. In the 2nd ½ of this piece, for example, the alternation of duple & triple meters, often abrupt but never crude, is fascinating.
registration: 8' Prestant, 2' Octaav ; later ± Sesquialtera
