A filmmaker makes a fan film.

Lance dreams of being a filmmaker more than anything, and he decides that making a viral "fan film" of his favorite fantasy story will be his foot in the door. He embarks on the process of filmmaking, getting a camera, hiring an editor and auditioning actors.

Once he finds his ideal leading man in Liam, Lance and his wife Ava take off with the actor to the wide open landscapes of Idaho to film Lance's magnum opus. But as Lance gets caught up in his Hollywood dream, he neglects to look at the reality around him until it's too late -- and his delusions of grandeur take over.

Directed and written by Drew Garcia, this darkly funny short starts out as an amiable comedy capturing one man's quixotic pursuit of Hollywood success. But as the story zigzags between past and present and weaves between plot developments, it accomplishes a seamless, sly about-face in genre, making for a propulsive viewing experience that's unsettling and entertaining all at once.

Shot with a slightly dark gleam in the cinematography and told with a brisk pace, this narrative sleight-of-hand is yoked to the organic development of its main character. Lance begins the narrative as a semi-delusional geeky middle-aged man with a near-impossible dream, which he sets about achieving in a way that the kids today would describe as "cringe." He aims to make a viral "fan film" that will gain him visibility and put him on the map as a filmmaker, and the sharp storytelling mines his sometimes clueless efforts for humor, poking fun at both the tropes of online fantasy fandom and the cliches of filmmaking.

After hiring a professional editor, his momentum picks up when Lance hits the road for his shoot, with Liam and Ava in tow. He's so caught up in his fantasies of being a hot-shot director that he fails to pay attention to the growing attraction between his wife and his lead actor. As Lance, actor Greg Ilk captures Lance's transformation from a mild-mannered husband to a bolder, more driven personality, as he immerses himself in the making of the film. He gets caught up in the dream of it all -- a personal peak that curdles when he discovers the reality outside his vision.

That hubris twists itself into the dark, genuinely tense ending section of FAN FILM, transforming what looked like a dark comedy into a top-notch thriller, completely with a suspenseful, shocking climax. It has the bold polish and bravura energy of a Hollywood blockbuster, playing out a showdown that proves as grimly satisfying as any film noir. And it ends with an ironic zinger, a wry cautionary tale on just how far down our darkest dreams and deepest delusions can pull us.
