False killer whales are a large species of dolphin that are found in waters around the world. In Hawaii, there is an endangered population of false killer whales that lives around the main Hawaiian islands all year round. Pacific Whale Foundation has been researching their health and status of this population to help inform management and conservation measures.
In the footage you're watching, this group of false killer whales was hunting and we were lucky enough to witness them successfully catch a type of fish called Ulua. The false killer whales brought a fish to our research boat and left it just a couple of feet away from us. They later took the fish and passed it back and forth among members of the group before ultimately eating it.
