Tiara Na’puti
Assistant Professor, Global and International Studies | Ph.D., The University of Texas at Austin

Tiara Na’puti, global and international studies assistant professor, studies issues of militarism and sovereignty in the Pacific Islands, specifically Guåhan/Guam. As an Indigenous Chamoru (familian Robat & Kaderon) she is committed to understanding how Indigenous communities there address issues of political status as well as militarization and climate change.

Na’puti earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in communication studies at The University of Texas at Austin. She has published in journals including American Quarterly, Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies, Quarterly Journal of Speech, and Feminist Studies. Her public scholarship about militarism in U.S. territories has appeared in venues such as In These Times and Common Dreams. And she testified at the United Nations Special Political and Decolonization Committee (4th Committee) on the political status of Guåhan. She’s a member of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA), the National Communication Association and the Rhetoric Society of America.

For the coming academic year, she is a UCI Chancellor’s Inclusive Excellence Awardee and will be completing a one-year Mellon/ACLS Scholars and Society Fellowship, working with communities in Guåhan on issues of sovereignty and climate change. She’ll be on the UCI campus starting in fall 2022 and she looks forward to working with the Department of Global and International Studies’ interdisciplinary scholars and the richly diverse Anteater student population.
