We want our spiritual walks to be a straight line, but oftentimes they are more of a zigzag. We wish to plan out our lives – or at least know what lies ahead – but we can’t see that far. Sometimes God transforms us instantly through a worship night or conversation, but most of the time becoming like Jesus takes time, intentionality, and patience.
Continuing our walk through Philippians, Torrey Conference 2022 dives into Philippians 2:12-13: Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
A few questions arise about the spiritual growth (salvation) process in these verses:
- What is my part in spiritual growth (work out)?
- What is God’s part (works in)?
- How does this all work together?
The main goal of TC22 is to explore how we work out our salvation while God works in us through three main avenues of spiritual growth:
- Spiritual practices
- Story
- Suffering
Each session will unpack the importance of these three S’s.

Brian Peterson
They say that life begins outside of your comfort zone and Brian Peterson is a true testament to that theory. Art is nothing new for Brian. His artistic skills were discovered by his 4th grade teacher in Miami, FL and he’s had a passion ever since. Brian attended art programs throughout elementary school, middle school, high school and later graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2009 with a degree in Industrial Design. His industrial-focused career left his desire to paint on the back burner as he pursued his dream job as a Sr. Automotive Designer at Kia Design Center America. Through his car design endeavors, Brian has had the privilege to design multiple Kia cars and travel around the world to present his work.
In 2015, Brian discovered his acceptance of faith in Jesus which ultimately reignited his passion for creativity and the desire to create alongside God. This re-emergence of artistic life started by addressing the “elephant in the room.” For the first time in his life, Brian was able to connect his love for art, his community, and Jesus together to form The Faces of Santa Ana, a non-profit organization that focuses on homelessness and the rehabilitation of our neighbors in Santa Ana, CA.
As Brian continues to pursue his devotion for art, his private collection of work is inspired by his relationship with the Creator and the beauty that he finds in nature. (Fun Fact: Brian loves nature and animal shows.) Brian has currently expanded his portfolio of services to include personal commissions, large-scale murals and public speaking engagements.

Kyle Strobel (Ph.D. University of Aberdeen) is a systematic theologian who teaches spiritual theology for Talbot’s Institute for Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Formation Focus programs. His areas of interest include systematic theology, Jonathan Edwards, spiritual formation and prayer. He writes both popular and academic books and articles, and is on the preaching team at Redeemer Church, La Mirada. Kyle and his wife have lived in Scotland, Connecticut, Colorado and Arizona before settling down in Southern California, and they have two young children.
