Why do so many online music producers spend more time talking about hardware than actually producing records?
In this video, I break down what I believe has happened to the meaning of MUSIC PRODUCTION in the YouTube era.
MPCs, drum machines, plugins, controllers and studio gear are tools. But owning equipment, making beats and creating gear content doesn't automatically represent the complete job of producing music.
Music production is bigger.
It's working with artists.
Developing records.
Directing sessions.
Understanding recording.
Making creative decisions.
Solving problems.
Learning musicianship.
Building relationships.
And ultimately turning ideas into SONGS.
I tell the story of watching a producer named One Touch work from a small bedroom studio in Long Island during the early 2000s. Limited equipment. One microphone. Artists coming through constantly. Beats being made. Vocals being recorded. Sessions being directed. Records being created.
I watched that before I even knew how to make a beat myself.
That experience helped shape my understanding of what a music producer actually DOES.
Today, I see a completely different culture online: cameras, studio lighting, affiliate marketing, product launches, MPC discussions and endless conversations about what piece of gear producers should buy next.
That's why I've been discussing FAKE MUSIC PRODUCERS.
I'm not saying equipment doesn't matter.
I'm saying:
THE EQUIPMENT IS THE TOOL.
THE MUSIC IS THE PURPOSE.
If you want to become a better producer, don't only learn your MPC.
Learn MUSIC.
Learn arrangement.
Learn composition.
Learn recording.
Learn sound.
Learn your ears.
Learn how artists work.
Learn how songs become records.
Then use whatever tools you have to create something original.
