FAKE MUSIC PRODUCERS DON’T KNOW HOW TO SOUND DESIGN.
There’s a major difference between selecting a preset and actually understanding sound.
In this episode of the Fake Music Producers series, I break down why I believe exploration is one of the most important parts of becoming a real music producer. If all you know how to do is load presets, repeat techniques you learned online, and make rehearsed content, how much do you actually understand about the sounds you’re using?
My relationship with sound design goes back years.
While attending the Institute of Audio Research (IAR) in New York from 2009–2010, I studied audio and worked on sound-design projects involving audio synchronized to visual media. For one of my projects, I worked with footage from Gears of War and had to think beyond music—creating and selecting sounds that could represent things like armored footsteps, movement, environments, impacts, atmosphere and emotion.
That experience became part of a much larger creative journey.
In 2011, I began developing what I called “Movietage”—my cinematic approach to montage filmmaking. Sound wasn't simply something placed underneath the visuals. Sound helped CREATE the world.
That same philosophy eventually carried deeper into my music production.
Today, when I'm building music with the Roland FA-06 and Akai MPC Live, I'm not simply scrolling through presets. I'm exploring Studio Sets, tones, layers, effects, chorus, reverb, routing, stereo placement, texture, movement and how individual sounds interact inside an arrangement.
A preset is the STARTING POINT.
The real question is:
Do you understand what is creating that sound?
Do you understand the tone?
The effects?
The layers?
The space?
The movement?
The emotion?
That is sound exploration.
And that is one of the biggest differences between simply making content about music production and actually spending years exploring sound.
I explore sound.
I explore music.
I explore film.
I explore life.
That exploration becomes part of the work.

This isn't about buying another plugin.
This isn't about buying another keyboard.
This isn't about finding another preset pack.
EXPLORE SOUND.
Understand what you're hearing.
Then create something that actually belongs to you.
