Paul in chains was freer than Festus on his throne because he knew who he belonged to. And when we know who we belong to, we start living differently. Empires can raid our communities, but they cannot take our compassion, our convictions, or our courage. They can build monuments to greed and grift, but they cannot take our generosity. They can pollute the air, but they cannot choke out our hope. Because we belong to a different kingdom—one where love still wins, the last are first, and the hungry are filled with good things and the rich are sent away empty.
So maybe the question for us is this: Will we live like that kingdom is real?"
