This July, America will celebrate our semi-quincentennial birthday—but amidst a time of low social trust and high political division. Campus life, too, remains engrossed in debates over DEI and the true meaning of pluralism. Clark Gilbert was called on February 12, 2026, to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In conversation with McKay Coppins of The Atlantic, he will preview one tradition’s reason for hope, even in an institutional moment that can seem despairing.
